The Beauty of Romanticism : Week of 1.17

From the first time that I had learned about the ideas of romanticism, I fell in love. I love the ideas of connecting back to nature and that childlike innocence's that is blocked by the growth of technology. The ideals of romanticism also rely heavily on the inner-self, something I think needs a lot more attention majority of the time. Also when looking at things in a romantic view their is so much more opportunity for inflection. Like we discussed in class, referring back to Wanderer above the Sea of Fog, romanticism is full of unknowns and possibility, all while referring back to natural beauty. We are allowed to infer for ourselves what the beauty in the painting is without being persuaded by the figures race, cloths, or even his facial expression. I love romanticism because of all of the possibility. Much of life and history is simply placed upon us, but in romanticism we are able to draw our own conclusions from the world around us.

  1. Illy, I thought what you said about the ideals of romanticism relying heavily on the inner-self very intriguing. I have never thought about it like that before, but I see what you mean by that. Romanticism is based on the beauty of our roots, just how an untouched field of flowers is more romantic than an industrial city. We are forced to look at the natural beauty of what is around us with the former instead of looking at what we created and calling it beautiful.

  2. Thank you, Illy, for the post. I like what you wrote about Romanticism and the emphasis or attention on the inner-self. Perhaps if more people took the time to take a deep breath and contemplate the beauty of nature and reflect upon their inner thoughts we might live in a better world.
