Universal Language : Week of 12.6

The dance lessons this week and the lessons that we had about music really solidified my opinion that music and dance is a universal language. Even without a sense of rhythm a person can express themselves through music. A dance doesn’t need to follow and exact pattern to express how someone is feeling. Music also invites change in society. Artists like Bob Marley, Willie Colon, and Ruben Blades sing for social change and issues in society. Bob Marley for example was such a prominent social leader in Jamaica because of what of an impact that his music had on his reggae community. This music is still very prominent in todays society, as people want to connect back to the past. The catchy lyrics and the beats that just make you want to stand up and dance, are what make these songs immortal. I for one LOVE music, and once when I was 9 or so, I memorized an entire song in Portuguese, a language I had not yet known, just because I saw the joy that it had brought to my VoVo. Music can connect people on so many levels, and I believe that lessons like this allow for us to connect to a different culture and better understand why they speak through music.
