Spectrum of Race in Every Society: Week 11. 1
This week seemed to be one that pushed is past our comfort boundaries and finally made us think about a topic that is so broad, and is sort of uncomfortable for us to talk about freely. In todays society it is hard to talk about race and racism, however, this conversation is needed in order to make any sort of progress in society. Race is defined as, "a grouping of humans based on shared physical or social qualities", but race is much deeper, extending into cultural background and social society. I for one am a white passing individual, who recognizes my privilege, but wishes I could express my Latina hertiage more. Race is a characteristic, especially in America, that determines your social standing, but that is not how it should be. We should not feel uncomfortable accepting who we are, and every part of ourselves, but the standard of race in our lives hinders our opportunities.
Thank you, Illy, for your post. I like how you describe yourself as a "white passing individual" who recognizes the privilege that being placed under a particular category accords you. I think your experience also shows that Latinos are not a homogeneous group. There are white Latinos as there are Afro-descendent and indigenous Latinos. Expressing more your Latina heritage would make this more visible to others.
