 Amanda, I also think that the idea of a illegitimate child responsibility is crazy, not only back in colonial times, but even today. Even in such an advanced and progressive society we still seem to blame a woman for unplanned pregnancy and the birth of a child before marriage. The women were supposed to be submissive to the man, but they were responsible if a child resulted in this submissive act. Even today a woman is supposed to hold responsibility for a child before marriage, and a man can feel the urge to leave, and just go.
